Floods and rain-induced landslides have killed six people in Assam and Meghalaya over the past two days, bringing the death toll in the northeastern region to at least 25 since late June.
The flood situation in Assam deteriorated on Monday, impacting 3.63 lakh residents across 16 districts in the eastern, central, western and southern areas. State disaster officials reported five deaths, including three men and two girls, in Jorhat and Karbi Anglong districts.
A total of 794 villages remain submerged and 19,099.59 hectares of farmland have been damaged. Over 34,900 people have been moved to relief camps in the affected districts, according to authorities.
Five rivers, including the Brahmaputra, are flowing above danger levels at several points. Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat districts have been hit hardest, with 3.13 lakh people affected.
The chief minister directed four cabinet members to visit the impacted areas and supervise rescue and relief work. Officials were told to maintain food supplies and all departments were placed on alert to reduce flood damage.
Rescue operations continue with state forces and emergency services evacuating 510 people in Sivasagar. Additional boats and helicopters were sent to reach cut-off locations.
Railway services in eastern Assam have been disrupted after floodwaters covered tracks and stations near Simaluguri.
The weather department has forecast continued rainfall across the state for the next two days.
In Meghalaya, a child died in a landslide in Ri-Bhoi district, while several roads remain blocked. In Nagaland, the death toll from landslides in Mon rose to nine. Authorities warned of thunderstorms and rain over the next four days.
The chief minister visited Mon to review conditions and restoration efforts, including aerial surveys of other affected areas.
Earlier in June, five people died in flash floods in Arunachal Pradesh.
