Chinese technology company Tencent has dismissed a project manager from its WeChat unit after confidential pay details appeared online, according to a South China Morning Post report. The action has sparked widespread discussion on social media.

The employee, identified only by the surname Ye, was removed for sharing internal company information externally. An internal notice seen by staff stated that the disclosure caused significant negative effects both within and outside the organization.

Ye worked as a project manager in the Weixin Group, which oversees WeChat, the popular messaging platform with 1.3 billion users.

After the incident, the company’s anti-corruption unit confirmed that Ye was not only terminated but also barred from any future employment at Tencent.

A further official notice on disciplinary actions is expected soon.

The issue began when a screenshot of Ye’s annual pay package circulated on Chinese social platforms. The document showed total compensation of about 3.17 million yuan, or roughly 45.38 lakh rupees, including a cash bonus over 820,000 yuan and stock awards exceeding 2.35 million yuan.

The case highlights Tencent’s strict policy against sharing sensitive data such as employee records or trade secrets. In its January report, the company noted that its compliance team identified more than 70 violations during 2025.
