South Asian patients often encounter extended delays for organ transplants. NHS data show a mismatch between the number of individuals requiring transplants and the availability of donors from comparable backgrounds. NHS Blood and Transplant reported a limited number of deceased South Asian donors last year, while hundreds of South Asian patients stayed on waiting lists. The NHS notes that organ compatibility improves when donors and recipients share similar blood and tissue types, underscoring the value of additional South Asian donors. During South Asian Heritage Month, the NHS urges families to discuss organ donation and record decisions on the NHS Organ Donor Register. Thousands across the UK await life-saving transplants. South Asian patients face longer waits, especially for kidney transplants, owing to limited suitable matches. Medical staff indicate that some on waiting lists may never receive organs, stressing the need for greater donation rates. Harpreet Matharu of NHS Blood and Transplant called for clear statements of donation wishes to inform families. One family illustrated the effect of donation. Bevi Sandhu from Hounslow consented to donate her son Sunni Bansal’s organs following his sudden death earlier in 2026. Sunni, who had autism and a learning disability, became a donor after his family concluded he would have approved. His organs aided several recipients and supported medical research. Bevi noted that donation provided solace by extending her son’s help to others. She observed that such discussions were uncommon in her Sikh community prior to the event. After the funeral, a letter detailing the donation’s impact prompted further talks among relatives and friends. Bevi stated that one discussion can prompt others to consider donation. Heart transplant recipient Mehreen Ahmed also advocated for more South Asian families to address the topic. She recalled limited prior awareness until her own need arose. The NHS pointed out that diabetes and high blood pressure, more prevalent in some South Asian groups, raise kidney transplant demand. The agency seeks wider understanding of donation, open family talks, and registration. Additional donors from South Asian communities could assist many waiting patients.
