Khadija Patel has responded to online racism and abuse after being recognized at the Palace of Westminster for her efforts to empower young women through sport. As founder of KRIMMZ Girls Youth Club, she was honored at the British Citizen Award ceremony with other volunteers for years of service supporting girls and women in Bolton. After photos from the event appeared online, Patel faced racist and Islamophobic remarks, some targeting her clothing and faith instead of her contributions. The incident prompted broader debate focused on her appearance rather than her impact. Patel noted the negativity but stressed the need for better understanding and recognition of Muslim women’s daily contributions. She pledged to keep promoting inclusion and opportunities for young women, describing the award as recognition for all involved with the club. The organization fosters social inclusion, health, wellbeing and development via sport for hundreds of participants in areas like Rumworth, Great Lever and Halliwell. Patel acknowledged challenges as a Muslim woman advancing physical activity but said they would not deter her work. She thanked those who supported her and called for focus on positive contributions from all backgrounds.
