The Tamil Nadu government led by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against a Madras High Court order that invalidated government jobs granted to relatives of Karur stampede victims. The Madurai Bench had quashed the relevant state orders on July 27. Officials maintained the positions were offered as a compassionate measure. The court ruled that established guidelines for compassionate appointments cannot be disregarded and warned that allowing the action could encourage further exceptions. It highlighted existing waiting lists in departments and stressed that hires must follow seniority rather than immediate need. Bypassing those lists would violate equality and due process under Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution. The state cited executive powers under Article 162, yet the bench held that such authority must stay within constitutional bounds. The stampede occurred in September last year at a roadshow held by the party now led by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay.
