The Karnataka Lokayukta has instructed the five Greater Bengaluru municipal corporations and Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited to intensify actions against garbage black spots and ensure proper solid waste handling, with a deadline of August 15 for key improvements.

During a July 29 review, the Lokayukta expressed concern over ongoing black spots despite earlier orders and meetings. Complaints about illegal dumping and improper disposal continue from multiple city areas.

The meeting checked compliance with June 10 directives given to corporation commissioners and the BSWML Chief Operating Officer for better waste management.

Civic bodies must fit GPS devices on collection vehicles immediately, install them where missing, and retire older vehicles unable to support the technology. Junior Health Inspectors, supervisors and marshals will prevent new black spots. Assistant General Managers will monitor collection in residential zones and interior roads. BSWML must act against non-compliant contractors.

Bengaluru East City Corporation reported 168 identified spots with 50 cleared and pledged full removal by August 15 along with prevention steps.

Bengaluru West City Corporation has cleared 155 of 385 spots and plans to address 150 more by the deadline.

Bengaluru North City Corporation has removed 171 of 268 spots and aims to clear at least 50 additional ones by August 15 in phases.

The BSWML Chief Operating Officer stated that Intel-supplied GPS units are being installed, with 500 vehicles in C.V. Raman Nagar and Shantinagar zones targeted by August 15.

BSWML identified 5,837 Bulk Waste Generators through a survey and plans to activate 1,000 waste processors across the corporations by August 15 to improve processing and reduce illegal dumping.

All agencies must submit regular progress reports and enforce waste rules strictly to eliminate black spots and improve cleanliness in Bengaluru.
