Artificial intelligence is transforming the technology sector, raising concerns among entry-level and mid-career workers. Beyond fears of automation replacing positions, AI-based screening systems now often discard resumes before human review. Prasad Rao, a past Google recruiter with extensive hiring experience, states that traditional approaches to applications are outdated. In today’s competitive environment, precise alignment with job requirements is essential to advance past initial filters. Speaking with Livemint, he detailed current recruiter priorities, common resume issues, and methods to improve chances for new positions. Rao noted that submitting applications to numerous unrelated openings does not boost success rates. Recruiters instead favor focused submissions, as random applications can signal poor self-assessment. He added that candidates lacking the specified experience level should not apply to roles requiring greater expertise. Leading technology companies rely on AI tools to handle large volumes of applications, meaning resumes must match job descriptions closely or risk elimination. Recruiters may review only a small subset of relevant profiles after automated sorting. For recent graduates, Rao recommends placing strong academic details prominently, as hiring managers spend little time on each profile. Clear, concise formatting helps avoid rejection. He emphasized that for new graduates, grade point average stands out as the primary detail of interest. Candidates should also specify their individual contributions to projects or internships rather than using general statements about group work. Vague descriptions fail to demonstrate skills effectively. Rao listed three key principles for success after the resume stage: develop deep expertise in core skills, maintain a humble and open attitude toward feedback, and show willingness to collaborate. Poor demeanor during interviews has cost candidates opportunities, he observed.
