Recent reports indicate that nearly 120 scientists have resigned from the Indian Space Research Organisation, sparking concerns. ISRO represents a key part of India’s scientific goals, and this level of departures cannot be seen as routine staff changes. While resignations have happened before, the recent numbers raise questions about why some of the country’s top scientific talent is choosing to leave institutions that many aspire to join. The issue extends beyond ISRO to labs under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, leading autonomous institutes, and other government-funded research bodies. These exits often go unnoticed individually but together signal a broader problem that requires national focus. Pay is frequently cited as a factor, yet it does not fully explain the trend. Many leaving are mid-to-late career professionals who value stability and seek instead greater professional respect, intellectual freedom, and the ability to pursue chosen research topics. Researchers describe a growing emphasis on administrative control over scientific priorities, along with risks in challenging decisions. Indian science built strong institutions but kept an older bureaucratic approach. Research advances best when ideas are freely debated rather than when individuals seek influence. Many labs maintain strict hierarchies uncommon in top global centers. Younger scientists often find that success depends more on navigating rules than on posing strong questions. Simple professional interactions can be seen as improper, and respect is tied to rank rather than achievement. Creative work requires that a student can question a senior hypothesis without career harm and that new researchers can challenge established views. Leading research settings allow such exchanges, as seen in international conferences where senior figures and students interact openly. In contrast, many Indian scientific events maintain formal separations, with special arrangements for senior participants that create visible divides. These practices reinforce unnecessary barriers. Scientists seldom discuss workplace problems openly because the community is small and connections affect reviews, appointments, and funding. Reports of misconduct occasionally surface, and the perception of such issues harms the environment. Talented researchers are moving to private labs, technology firms, or positions abroad where they find more independence. While India’s wider research scene gains from this shift, national labs lose experienced staff and continuity. The country is investing more in science than before, though funding remains limited relative to needs.
