The US government has revoked commercial driver’s licenses from about 28,000 non-citizens and plans to replace them with military veterans. The program, confirmed last week, allows veterans skilled in operating large vehicles to skip certain tests when applying for licenses. Federal and state agencies worked together to cancel licenses held by non-citizens who cannot read or speak English proficiently. English language rules for truck drivers have been enforced since last summer after a deadly crash in Florida involving a driver lacking language skills. Transportation officials stated the effort removes unsafe drivers and improves road safety. The trucking industry has supported the changes, saying they help keep unqualified operators off the roads.
