Actor Sunny Deol offered a personal view on Pakistan at a press event for his upcoming film Batwara 1947. The 68-year-old, joined by his son Karan Deol, responded to a question about the country in light of the movie’s Partition setting. He spoke of the shared past between India and Pakistan before 1947 and recalled his father Dharmendra referring to Pakistan affectionately as his “mausi,” or aunt. Deol noted that the region was once one country and that family ties connect people across borders. He avoided further discussion of current relations or politics, stating that actors focus on storytelling rather than political matters. The film follows a Muslim family moving from Lucknow to Lahore during Partition and receiving a house still occupied by a Hindu woman who refuses to leave. Deol’s character supports her efforts to stay. The project reunites him with director Rajkumar Santoshi, following earlier collaborations on films such as Ghayal, Damini and Ghatak.
