The Electronic National Agriculture Market, known as e-NAM, continues to grow across India. Uttar Pradesh now has the largest number of registered farmers on the platform. The system seeks to link wholesale agricultural markets digitally and to increase transparency, price discovery and access for producers. Launched on April 14, 2016, e-NAM is a nationwide electronic trading platform that joins Agricultural Produce Market Committee mandis through one digital network. It does not replace physical markets but allows online trading, open bidding, quality testing, electronic payments and trade between states. As of June 30, 2025, 1,522 mandis in 27 states and union territories were connected. More than 1.79 crore farmers and 2.67 lakh traders had registered. Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest participation, with 33.05 lakh farmers enrolled by the same date. Registered farmers can use online bidding, market data, electronic payments and a larger buyer network. The state government has increased efforts to improve agricultural marketing facilities. At the 172nd board meeting of the Uttar Pradesh State Agricultural Produce Market Council on July 31, 2026, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a budget of Rs 3,025.49 crore for 2026-27 was approved. The meeting focused on extending e-NAM to additional mandis and upgrading basic infrastructure such as water, sanitation and lighting. Plans also include promoting processing units through public-private partnerships, strengthening procurement of pulses and oilseeds, and supporting natural farming. While e-NAM improves transparency and market reach, it does not ensure higher prices. Farmer returns still depend on quality, demand, supply, location and bidding outcomes. As Uttar Pradesh advances both digital links and physical infrastructure, e-NAM is set to stay central to the state’s agricultural marketing system.
