Australian Under-19 all-rounder Neel Patel recalls his first cricket experiences on the balcony of his family home in Australia, where his grandfather bowled underarm deliveries and he swung a foam bat. That early enjoyment has stayed with the 17-year-old as he prepares for a tour of India. Patel, whose father moved from India to Australia in 2001, will join 15 teammates for three one-day internationals and two four-day matches in Rajkot and Ahmedabad beginning September 13. He expects the heat and different pitches to challenge his skills and views the trip as a chance to improve against spin bowling and in demanding conditions. Patel grew up admiring Australian players such as Ricky Ponting and Steve Smith, along with several Indian cricketers who encouraged fearless play. He began as a genuine all-rounder but later focused more on batting after strong performances in Sydney grade cricket, while continuing to bowl off-spin. The upcoming fixtures will test both aspects of his game in unfamiliar surroundings.
