Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay introduced a resolution in the state Assembly on Wednesday opposing the proposed delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies. He supported women’s reservation but called for its rollout within the current total of 543 seats. The leader cautioned that southern states like Tamil Nadu, which have curbed population growth effectively, risk reduced parliamentary representation if the exercise relies solely on population figures. The move follows the central government’s efforts to link delimitation with women’s reservation legislation. Reports suggest the constitutional amendment bill could be introduced in the final days of the Monsoon session. The resolution outlined three main points: keeping the 543 Lok Sabha seats unchanged permanently, fixing each state’s allocation, and ensuring one-third of seats in assemblies go to women. Vijay stated that passage of the bill would disadvantage southern states and that freezing the numbers is essential.
