Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran stated in a formal message that he will not pursue reappointment when his term concludes on February 20, 2027. This ends months of speculation about leadership at the $400-billion Tata Group. The message was directed to the Tata Sons Board.

Chandrasekaran noted that he had completed 40 years with the Tata Group and described heading Tata Sons for the past decade as a great honor and major responsibility.

The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had unanimously backed a five-year extension, a step also endorsed by the Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the Board. The proposal was presented to the Tata Sons Board on February 24, 2026. However, it did not pass after one board member declined support. Without full agreement, Chandrasekaran chose to defer the matter.

Six months later, with no resolution and several strategic projects at key stages, he stressed that leadership clarity was needed for employees, investors and partners. He informed the board that he would not offer himself for reappointment and requested prompt action on succession to allow a smooth transition.

The announcement follows reported tensions between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts, the charitable body holding roughly 66 percent of Tata Sons. Speculation had centered on reservations from Noel Tata regarding Chandrasekaran’s continuation, with shareholders set to vote on his directorship at the August 18 annual meeting. Shares of several Tata companies declined in the preceding days amid uncertainty.

Chandrasekaran joined the Tata Group in 1987, became chief executive of TCS in 2009 and was appointed Tata Sons chairman in 2017, succeeding Cyrus Mistry. He received a second term in 2022. Attention now turns to the board and Tata Trusts to select a successor.
