Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday emphasized India’s move toward cleaner and more self-sufficient energy, pointing to the debut of the nation’s first hydrogen-powered train and the completion of full railway electrification as key accomplishments during his 12-year tenure. Speaking to the country from the ramparts of Delhi’s historic Red Fort on the 80th Independence Day, he said these developments showed efforts to lessen reliance on traditional fuels while boosting local strengths. Referring to the hydrogen train, which began service from Haryana’s Jind station last month, Modi noted that India had entered a fresh stage in rail technology. He stated the country had advanced into new territory regarding train fuel by launching its first hydrogen-powered train, describing it as the longest and most powerful of its type. This was presented as evidence of India’s expanding skills in future-focused transport systems. The hydrogen train consists of 10 coaches, including two power cars and eight trailers, with capacity for about 2,600 passengers. It produces electricity on board via a 1,200-kilowatt fuel cell using hydrogen and oxygen, with water vapor and heat as the only byproducts. It operates at an approved speed of 75 kmph and a design speed of 110 kmph, featuring safety systems for leak and flame detection along with continuous monitoring. The train runs on the 89-km Jind-Sonipat route and uses a dedicated refueling facility at Jind. Modi also noted the swift progress in railway electrification. He observed that while electrification began in 1925, only 30 percent of the network was completed in the following 90 years. In contrast, the past decade achieved full coverage, reducing diesel imports and benefiting both the economy and environment. He linked these steps to a broader focus on alternative energy sources and domestic technology. Modi further discussed energy security and self-reliance, noting the opening of 99 percent of coastal areas previously restricted for exploration, along with plans for deep-sea searches backed by Rs 85,000 crore. These measures fit into the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, with energy security as a core element. He also repeated the goal of making India a developed nation by 2047, urging collective effort from 1.4 billion citizens. The hydrogen train, electrification, and exploration efforts are seen as part of India’s shift to cleaner energy and reduced import reliance.
