TMC MP Mahua Moitra has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla claiming that Nadia district officials attempted to remove her from a Circuit House in Krishnanagar late at night after first assigning her a room. The Krishnanagar MP requested the Speaker’s help, stating the incident raised issues about the safety of women parliamentarians and suggesting she might seek court relief. Moitra said she arrived at the Circuit House around 6:15 pm on Friday and was directed to her usual room, where tea and dinner were provided. She reported receiving a call at 9:47 pm from an additional district magistrate instructing her to leave, citing orders from higher authorities. Later, at 10:52 pm, she received a WhatsApp message with an order closing the facility from August 14 evening for maintenance, though prior bookings were exempt. She questioned why a room and meals were arranged if the closure was already decided and why the request came so late. Moitra further stated that around 11 pm a crowd assembled outside and chanted slogans after she declined to depart. She described the setting as intimidating, noting the Circuit House faces the homes of the district magistrate and police superintendent. No immediate response came from the Nadia administration. In her letter, Moitra noted that MPs are entitled to such accommodation during constituency visits and that requiring a woman MP alone to leave at night posed security risks. She asked the Speaker to act to protect the dignity of women parliamentarians and referenced the Women’s Reservation Bill. Moitra also posted a video indicating she would not yield and might file a privilege motion or approach the Calcutta High Court. The matter drew reactions from TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee, Congress figure Pawan Khera and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who criticised the handling.
