India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), launched in January 2023, has made significant progress in its first full year of operations, attracting substantial investment and establishing foundational infrastructure for a global hydrogen hub
. The mission aims to make India a leader in clean hydrogen, with a target of 5 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) annual production by 2030, supported by over ₹8 lakh crore (approximately $95-$100 billion) in total projected investments.
Key Achievements in the First Year
- Production & Electrolyzer Capacity: As of 2025, the mission has awarded 3,000 MW per annum of electrolyzer manufacturing capacity and 862,000 tonnes per annum of Green Hydrogen production capacity.
- Green Ammonia Success: Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) successfully discovered prices for 724,000 MTPA of Green Ammonia supply to 13 fertilizer units, with lowest prices around ₹49.75 per kg, signaling cost competitiveness.
- Pilot Projects: Several pilot projects are underway, including:
- Mobility: 37 hydrogen-fueled vehicles (buses and trucks) and 9 refueling stations across 10 routes, with a special emphasis on high-altitude operations in Leh.
- Shipping: Projects in V.O. Chidambaranar Port for green methanol bunkering and refueling.
- Steel: Five projects sanctioned for the use of hydrogen in steel manufacturing.
- Green Hydrogen Hubs: Three major ports—Deendayal Port (Gujarat), V.O. Chidambaranar Port (Tamil Nadu), and Paradip Port (Odisha)—have been recognized as Green Hydrogen Hubs to facilitate production, storage, and exports.Â
Mission Objectives by 2030
- Production: 5 MMT per annum of Green Hydrogen.
- Renewable Energy: 125 GW added capacity to support production.
- Investment: Over ₹8 lakh crore (total over the decade).
- Impact: Creation of over 6 lakh jobs and a reduction of over ₹1 lakh crore in fossil fuel imports.Â
Strategic Interventions
The SIGHT (Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition) programme, with an initial outlay of ₹17,490 crore, is providing incentives for electrolyzer manufacturing and green hydrogen production. The government has also launched the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India (GHCI) to ensure quality and compliance.
