Bharatiya Janata Party national general secretary in charge of organisation BL Santosh stated on August 25 that the party intends to field candidates across every one of the 117 assembly constituencies in Punjab for the elections scheduled in 2027. The announcement comes at a time when observers have been discussing the possibility of renewed ties with the Shiromani Akali Dal.
Speaking at the opening zonal session in Patiala during his two-day organisational tour of the state, Santosh emphasised that Punjab is prepared for a shift in leadership and that the BJP stands ready to deliver that change. He noted that the party will contest every seat on its own and aims to secure enough victories to form the next state government.
The remarks were issued through an official party statement. Santosh added that the upcoming polls represent an opportunity for the organisation to demonstrate its strength at every level, from the booth upwards. He described the current political climate in Punjab as one that favours fresh approaches and said the BJP has completed the necessary groundwork to capitalise on that sentiment.
Santosh arrived earlier the same day at Mohali airport, where he was received by state unit president Kewal Singh Dhillon and co-in-charge Narendra Singh Raina. His schedule includes a series of zonal meetings intended to assess the party’s readiness and to reinforce structures down to the lowest organisational tier.
The meetings are also expected to focus on communicating the central government’s policies and achievements under Prime Minister Narendra Modi to voters across different regions. Santosh chaired sessions in Patiala and Bathinda on the first day. Additional gatherings are planned in Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar on the following day, along with a separate session involving state general secretaries in Amritsar.
These interactions aim to evaluate ongoing activities, improve coordination among workers and ensure active participation at the grassroots. Party sources indicated that the emphasis remains on strengthening booth-level committees and preparing detailed constituency-wise strategies well in advance of the 2027 contest.
The decision to contest independently reflects the party’s assessment that it possesses sufficient organisational depth to succeed without external alliances. Santosh reiterated that the BJP views Punjab as a state where its message of development and governance can resonate widely. He urged workers to maintain discipline and focus on direct outreach rather than relying on partnerships.
Throughout his visit, Santosh is scheduled to review reports from various districts and to identify areas requiring additional attention. The party has already begun internal exercises to finalise candidate shortlists and to map voter concerns in both urban and rural segments.
Observers note that the BJP’s public stance removes uncertainty that had surrounded possible seat-sharing arrangements. By declaring its intention to fight alone, the party signals confidence in its ability to expand its footprint in a state where it has historically played a supporting role in coalitions.
The two-day programme is expected to conclude with directives for intensified membership drives and training sessions for booth agents. Santosh stressed that consistent organisational work over the next two years will determine the outcome in 2027. He called on all office-bearers to treat the coming period as a phase of consolidation and expansion.
Party workers present at the Patiala meeting described the tone as motivational, with repeated references to the need for discipline and sustained contact with voters. Similar messages are anticipated in the remaining zonal sessions. The overall objective, according to the release, is to ensure that the BJP enters the election cycle with a unified and well-prepared structure capable of securing a majority on its own.
No further details regarding specific candidate names or campaign themes were released during the initial day of meetings. The focus remained on procedural and organisational matters. Santosh is expected to continue similar reviews in other parts of Punjab before returning to Delhi.
