Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney took part in Sikh Heritage Month activities by visiting the Ottawa Gurdwara Sahib on Saturday, where he assisted with community service alongside local Sikh residents.
In a post on X, Carney shared a video and highlighted the importance of Canada’s Sikh population, which ranks as the second largest globally. He stated that Sikh Heritage Month honors the contributions of Sikh Canadians in fostering prosperity, enhancing communities, and building a more robust nation.
Throughout Canada, the month features various cultural and community-organized events. This year’s highlights include an exhibition called Baaghi ja Badshah, which examines pivotal moments in Sikh history, depicting the community as advocates for justice and leadership in pursuit of an equitable society.
The display embodies the Sikh principle of Halemi Raj, emphasizing equality, fairness, and moral leadership.
On April 13, the Indian Consulate in Toronto collaborated with Virasat-e-Khalsa to mark Vaisakhi in conjunction with Sikh Heritage Month. The gathering united Indian diaspora members and local figures, underscoring the cultural connections between India and Canada.
High Commissioner Dinesh K Patnaik referred to the diaspora as a vital link between the countries, and Consul General Mahaveer Singhvi noted the worldwide significance of Vaisakhi and Sikh traditions.
The event included traditional Bhangra and Gidda dances, musical performances, and recitations of Dhadhi Vaaran, illustrating Sikh principles of bravery, devotion, and solidarity.
Observed each April, Sikh Heritage Month acknowledges the impact of Sikh Canadians on the nation’s social and cultural landscape.
