Aditya Humad, former chief financial officer of US spinal implant firm SpineFrontier Inc., has been sentenced to four months in prison. The 41-year-old Cambridge resident will also complete one year of supervised release and pay a 9,500-dollar fine. Humad pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate the federal anti-kickback statute. He was charged in September 2021 with company founder Kingsley R. Chin. Prosecutors said Humad arranged over 540,000 dollars in sham consulting payments to surgeons who did not perform the claimed work. The payments aimed to encourage use of SpineFrontier products in operations, generating millions in revenue for the firm. US Attorney Leah B. Foley noted the sentence ends years of investigation into the executives and bribe-receiving doctors. More than four million dollars have been recovered through criminal and civil actions. Authorities stated the consulting contracts paid 250 to 1,000 dollars per hour but were used to mask payments for product use, including in Medicare and Medicaid procedures. Surgeons often reported far more hours than actually worked. Special Agent Roberto Coviello said the scheme undermined patient protections and taxpayer-funded healthcare programs.
