An officer of Indian origin was killed while on duty during an inquiry near Hearst in northern Ontario on Tuesday, officials reported. An 18-year-old suspect is now in custody as authorities examine the events leading to the fatality. Constable Tarun Bali served with the Ontario Provincial Police Dufferin Detachment for two and a half years and was assigned to the James Bay Detachment at the time. Officers were investigating near Kendall Concession Road 7 and Concession Road 6 around 12:30 pm when Bali suffered fatal injuries. The force stated that a member had been seriously hurt and later died. The OPP commissioner expressed sorrow over the loss, noting the officer’s dedication and extending condolences to family, colleagues and the wider policing community. The commissioner added that the suspect faces a first-degree murder charge along with counts of fleeing police and dangerous operation of a vehicle. Reports indicate the individual had left a hospital where assessment under mental health legislation was underway. Officers were attempting to detain the person when the collision occurred. The criminal investigation branch is handling the case with support from the chief coroner and forensic pathology services. Ontario’s premier conveyed sadness at the news and offered condolences on behalf of the province, praising the officer’s service and sacrifice. The OPP continues to assist the family. Police associations across the province also expressed grief, underscoring the daily risks faced by officers protecting residents.
