An Indian student in Canada has launched a fundraiser to repay education loans after being denied a work permit following graduation from Portage College. Samir Garhwal stated that completing the program left him in a more difficult position than when he arrived two years earlier with borrowed funds. Many graduates from the college faced mass rejections of their work permit applications, leaving them to choose between returning to India or pursuing legal challenges against immigration authorities. Garhwal noted that students had expected approvals after finishing their studies but encountered widespread denials instead. Rule changes in 2024 rendered some programs ineligible, though the students had enrolled earlier. He mentioned already holding one loan from India and lacking the means or willingness to borrow more. Returning home appears the main option, as legal steps require additional funds. Garhwal described moving to Canada three years ago hoping for improved prospects through study and effort while covering costs. The college indicated it continues seeking clarification on the permit denials and advises graduates to consult immigration experts. Reports link a partner institution to individuals connected to past immigration cases.
