An Indian woman who left the United States after losing her visa sponsorship now works in Germany and is weighing a return to India instead of pursuing further opportunities abroad. Ananya Joshi arrived in the US in 2022 for a master’s degree in biotechnology at Northwestern University in Illinois. She completed the program in 2024 and took a position paying $75,000 annually under F-1 OPT status. Her employer later withdrew support for an H-1B application due to issues with the E-Verify system. With her work authorization set to expire in July 2025, she resigned in May of that year to focus on job searches. Despite numerous interviews across the US, Europe, Canada, and Australia, she received only two offers. She accepted a role at a lab-grown meat startup in Rostock, Germany, citing the country’s labor protections and stability. Adjusting to the smaller city has proven challenging after time in New Delhi and Chicago, though she notes its cleanliness, safety, and coastal setting. Language barriers and limited transport links add difficulties. With her partner still in the US, she remains uncertain about returning there due to past immigration hurdles. She now explores starting her own venture in Mumbai or Bangalore, viewing India as offering strong professional growth potential.
