Godzilla Minus Zero, the follow-up to Takashi Yamazaki’s Oscar-winning film Godzilla Minus One, will debut worldwide as the Spotlight Gala at the 64th New York Film Festival. The screening takes place at Alice Tully Hall on September 26, with Yamazaki and key cast and crew members attending. The event, organized by Film at Lincoln Center with Rolex, runs from September 25 to October 12. The story is set in 1949, two years after the original, and follows the Shikishima family facing another crisis in postwar Japan. Yamazaki expressed honor at presenting the film to international viewers at such a respected venue and anticipation about its global impact. The 2023 predecessor reimagined the monster series through the experiences of a former pilot dealing with guilt amid Japan’s recovery. It starred Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, and Hidetaka Yoshioka, earned over 110 million dollars globally, and won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Festival artistic director Dennis Lim noted that Yamazaki revitalizes the franchise by returning to its postwar origins and delivering both drama and technical innovation. The sequel will be distributed worldwide by GKIDS.
