The National Human Rights Commission issued a notice to the Maharashtra government on Friday after taking up the case of three tribal girls who died from snakebites in a hostel at a residential school in Gadchiroli district. The bites occurred early Monday when six students were sleeping on the floor due to a reported shortage of beds. Three other students remain under medical care. The state chief minister directed the permanent cancellation of the school’s license the following day. The facility has operated for about 25 years, and the district sees many snakebite incidents annually. The commission expressed concern over possible human rights violations and inadequate facilities, asking the chief secretary for a detailed report within two weeks that includes updates on the injured students.
