Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad clashed with police on Friday while attempting to cross barricades near the Jharkhand Chief Minister’s residence, resulting in the detention of eight to ten participants, according to officials. The group had organized a march from Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University in Ranchi to show support for students protesting alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations. Police stopped the procession near Sidho Kanho Park to avoid any disturbance. The organization has announced plans for a larger march to the state assembly on August 11. Several ABVP office bearers were among those held and taken to Lalpur police station. A senior police officer stated that the action was taken to maintain order. ABVP leaders said the protest aimed to back student demands for cancellation of the 14th JPSC examination and the resignation of Chief Minister Hemant Soren. The demonstrations have now entered their 15th day after talks with the government failed to resolve the issue.
