A doctoral student at Delhi University’s Faculty of Law was suspended after CCTV footage reportedly captured him striking a professor on campus, leading the institution to launch an inquiry.
The individual involved is Shubham Singh, enrolled in the Faculty of Law for the 2024-25 session.
Footage reviewed by India Today shows Singh waiting near a building entrance before approaching Law Faculty professor Umang Bhawan and allegedly delivering the blow. Nearby students attempted to step in during the confrontation.
Delhi University acted swiftly against Singh. Proctor Manoj Kumar Singh stated the event occurred on Monday morning and confirmed a committee was set up to probe the matter.
The Proctor’s Office issued a suspension order removing Singh from the Faculty of Law immediately. He was also prohibited from accessing any Delhi University grounds during the ongoing inquiry.
A three-member independent panel of professors was formed to review the event, determine its causes, and suggest next steps.
The Democratic Teachers’ Front condemned the episode, noting it as the third recent case of aggression toward faculty. The group faulted the administration for a slow response and argued that suspension alone would not deter future incidents. It also referenced prior verbal abuse faced by professors from another law student.
The case has revived memories of an October 2025 incident at Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, where DU Students’ Union Joint Secretary Deepika Jha was accused of slapping professor Sujit Kumar. That event prompted protests and a two-month suspension for Jha, though some teachers deemed the penalty insufficient.
The new committee will investigate the circumstances of the latest confrontation and recommend further measures. Singh remains barred from the Faculty of Law and all university premises pending the outcome.
