The Ministry of Home Affairs has added eleven new ports to the network of international entry points allowing foreign nationals to enter India on e-visas. This brings the total number of such ports to eighty-eight.
The new points consist of nine land ports and two airports. The land ports are Attari on the India-Pakistan border along with Darranga, Gede, Ghojadanga, Haridaspur, Jaigaon, Dawki and Moreh. The airports are located in Bhopal and Tirupati.
Following the expansion, the eighty-eight ports comprise thirty-seven airports, thirty-eight seaports and thirteen land ports. The ministry said the change is intended to make the e-visa system more accessible and convenient for international visitors.
Officials described the move as part of efforts guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to simplify the visa regime. The aim is to facilitate travel for genuine foreign visitors while strengthening technological systems that support internal security.
An official statement noted that approximately ninety-five percent of e-visa applications are now processed within seventy-two hours.
India introduced the e-visa facility in 2014 for nationals of forty-three countries. The programme has since expanded and is now available to citizens of one hundred seventy-two countries across seventeen categories including tourist, business, medical, student and transit visas.
