Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that he would not employ his position to create adversaries or cause harm to others. He expressed his intention to collaborate with leaders from various political parties for the benefit of the state.

During the Legislative Assembly session on Tuesday, while congratulating the newly elected Deputy Speaker Mankal Vaidya, Mr. Shivakumar noted that he represents all legislators, not just those from the Congress party.

He remarked that positions of power can lead to either friendships or enmities, and he prefers to foster more alliances and provide assistance to everyone. His role should aid even the most disadvantaged individuals in society, he added.

Addressing demands from opposition members for equal fund allocation to all MLAs, Mr. Shivakumar referenced Swami Vivekananda, stating that one must be courageous in defeat and generous in victory.

Reflecting on his political career starting from student politics, he cited Otto von Bismarck’s view that politics is the art of the possible. He observed that several leaders from the BJP and JD(S) have switched parties over time to gain power and stay relevant.

Mr. Shivakumar reiterated that he would not misuse his office against anyone and would cooperate across party lines for state development. Everyone should strive for the state’s progress without animosity, he emphasized.

He indicated the state government’s willingness to work with Union Ministers and praised Union Minister S.R. Patil for his support on irrigation matters, especially regarding the Tungabhadra river water sharing.

Looking ahead to the next 25 years, Mr. Shivakumar urged setting aside political differences for Karnataka’s greater good. He called for collective efforts to improve the state now, with politics reserved for election times.

He noted that while power is temporary, those in authority should focus on public welfare when making laws and policies.

Additionally, Mr. Shivakumar announced a Cabinet meeting in Mangaluru and the upcoming release of a tourism policy to boost coastal tourism.

Regarding the Chief Ministers’ conference, he mentioned his travel to Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu for the Southern States Chief Ministers’ Conference on August 20, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

On the sidelines, he plans to meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to discuss the Cauvery water-sharing issue.
