Dogs often react differently to people showing anger compared with those who are crying. Owners commonly observe this behavior, which reflects how pets respond to human emotions. Research confirms dogs experience feelings and use social abilities that help them live with people.

A recent study in the journal iScience used MRI scans to examine whether dogs can separate specific negative emotions such as fear, sadness, and anger rather than simply grouping them as unpleasant states. Scientists already knew dogs pay attention to human faces and voices showing emotion.

Researchers at the University of Vienna scanned the brains of pet dogs while they viewed photos of human expressions. Machine learning analysis revealed that different brain areas became active when dogs distinguished fear from sadness, specifically the right rostral suprasylvian gyrus. Another set of regions, the right mid ectosylvian gyrus and left splenial gyrus, activated for fear versus anger.

No clear difference appeared in brain activity between anger and sadness. Fear produced a distinct pattern from the other two emotions. One explanation is that fear and anger demand quicker attention because they may signal immediate risk, leading to faster physical reactions like increased heart rate. Sadness usually presents less direct threat.

Although the study involved only eight to twelve dogs, it provides the first MRI evidence that canine brains differentiate between separate negative human emotions. The results indicate that emotion perception involves networks of brain regions rather than one dedicated center, a pattern seen across species.

The authors note that still photographs represent a limited approach, since dogs also rely on smell and sound to interpret feelings. Even wolves raised near humans respond to the scent of fear, showing that learning through daily contact shapes these responses.
