Intense rainfall flooded low-lying zones across Mumbai on Thursday morning, halting road and rail movement in multiple locations. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation reported that several neighborhoods recorded over 200 mm of rain in the preceding 24 hours. With the India Meteorological Department predicting continued showers, relief from flooding or congestion appears unlikely soon. Prime localities including Dadar, Parel, Hindmata, Charkop, Worli, Goregaon and Andheri saw significant water accumulation, impeding commuters and reducing vehicle speeds. Suburban train services faced delays from water on tracks, though rails remained above flood level, resulting in 10-15 minute late arrivals and crowded platforms during peak hours. Central Railway noted over 180 mm of precipitation yet maintained normal operations on its four lines despite passenger reports of slowdowns. Western Railway stated services ran as scheduled, though some users observed minor lags. In Chandivali, a man fell into an uncovered manhole during the downpour and died. Three workers had removed the cover for repairs when the individual, reportedly using a phone, stepped into the opening. CCTV captured the incident, showing staff attempting rescue with a ladder but recovering only personal items. Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar termed the event serious and called for a government statement in the legislature. The IMD warned of heavy to very heavy rain, possibly extreme overnight into Friday, with gusts up to 60 kmph. BMC recorded a high tide of 4.27 metres at 1.45 PM Thursday. Eastern suburbs averaged 189 mm, the island city 172 mm and western areas 165 mm, with peak readings reaching 238.8 mm at select stations.
