India’s Changing Global Role: Why Strategic Independence Matters More Than Ever

India’s growing influence in global affairs raises an important question: how should the country balance relationships with major powers while protecting its own strategic interests? India increasingly works with the United States, Europe, Russia, Japan, Gulf countries and partners across the Global South, but these relationships do not always have identical priorities. A flexible foreign-policy approach can allow India to cooperate with different countries on defence, trade, technology, energy and security while maintaining room for independent decision-making. The challenge is to convert growing diplomatic influence into long-term economic, technological and strategic advantages.
