Bengaluru authorities have implemented higher fares on state-run buses, drawing sharp responses from opposition groups. The move follows recent increases in milk prices and has led the Bharatiya Janata Party to plan protests across the state on November 5.

Officials from the opposition claim the revision represents one of the largest adjustments seen in recent years. They argue that outstanding payments to transport operators could have prevented the need for higher ticket costs. According to their statements, the state government owes approximately 5,650 crore rupees to four public transport bodies.

The leader of the opposition detailed specific route changes during a press event in the capital. Short city trips now cost several rupees more. For example, travel between central hubs previously priced at 12 rupees now stands at 18 rupees, while other segments rose from 18 to 25 rupees.

Longer routes show similar patterns. Journeys to nearby towns increased by 10 to 12 rupees, and express services to regional centers rose by up to 19 rupees on some corridors. Routes serving religious sites also reflect added charges ranging from 37 to 68 rupees.

Opposition figures contend that welfare programs for women have shifted costs onto other riders. They note that unpaid dues include large sums for employee benefits and fuel supplies, leaving operators short on maintenance resources.

The four corporations involved include the main state road transport body, its northwestern counterpart, the metropolitan service in Bengaluru, and the Kalyana Karnataka unit. Combined arrears total the cited figure, which critics say could have eased pressure without public impact.

Government borrowing guarantees for the operators have also drawn questions. Observers suggest clearing existing obligations might reduce reliance on new loans. Daily users, including students and workers, face the cumulative effect on household budgets.

The announcement comes shortly after other price adjustments in essential goods. Commuters report planning alternative travel options where possible, while transport staff monitor service reliability amid ongoing financial constraints.

Statewide demonstrations are scheduled to highlight these concerns. Organizers expect participation from multiple districts, focusing on the timing and scale of the revisions. Further details on participation and outcomes are anticipated in coming days.

Public transport remains a primary option for many residents in urban and rural areas alike. The fare structure affects access to employment, education, and essential services across the region. Authorities have not issued additional statements on potential adjustments or relief measures at this stage.
