In Korean, aegyo refers to a playful form of cuteness adopted by adults to gain affection, often in romantic settings. It typically involves shy expressions or a childlike speaking style similar to baby talk in other cultures. The behavior is common among K-pop performers, who may demonstrate it for fans, and appears in television dramas during romantic interactions. Researchers from Duksung Women’s University in South Korea and the University of Zurich in Switzerland examined the sound patterns of aegyo in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. They measured formant 1 values in vowels, which relate to vocal tract length. Speakers aged 25 to 31 read sentences both normally and in aegyo style. Results showed higher formant frequencies during aegyo, indicating an effort to mimic a shorter vocal tract. This produces a voice that seems smaller and younger, in contrast to animal behaviors that exaggerate size. The team plans further study on the physical techniques and social motivations behind the speech pattern, including possible effects on memory or bonding.
