On Wednesday night, Newcastle had a big task on their hands to try and overcome Barcelona away at the Spotify Camp Nou. Eddie Howeâs men went into the game as underdogs as expected; however, it was a strong start for the Northeast side as they went in at half-time only 3-2 down on the night. Unfortunately, they were unable to keep it up and Barcelona were rather rampant in the second half, winning the match 7-2 in the end.
A very heavy defeat for the English side, but does this defeat for Newcastle rank amongst the ten heaviest defeats in the tournamentâs knockout stage history?
Top 10 Heaviest Champions League Knockout Stage Defeats
10. PSV 1-7 Arsenal (2024/25)
Prior to the Round of 16 tie, Mikel Artetaâs men were being criticised for having a lack of attacking threat to their game. Although, despite being without a lot of senior attackers on the night, the Gunners went on to record a joint biggest-ever European away victory in the clubâs history.
9. Barcelona 2-8 Bayern Munich (2019/20)
This match occurred after the COVID restart so due to that, it was a one-legged affair in which Barcelona were the home side. However, rather unexpectedly, the Spanish side were on the receiving end of one of the biggest defeats in the clubâs history. Bayern started the match strongly and were 4-1 up at the halfway mark, but they continued their pressure and repeated the same score in the second half.
8. Barcelona 7-1 Bayer Leverkusen (2011/12)
In this case, Barcelona were on the better side of the result, with Bayer Leverkusen being rather unlucky to draw this side at this time. At the peak of his powers on the night, Lionel Messi scored five of the seven for Barcelona, with Cristian Tello also getting a brace on the night to dispatch the German side.
7. Bayern Munich 7-1 Sporting CP (2008/09)
Following an emphatic 5-0 win away from home in the first leg, it looked as if Bayern Munich were going to progress to the quarter-final. However, that didnât stop them as they came out flying in the second leg and ended up putting another seven goals past a very vulnerable Sporting CP defence.
6. Manchester United 7-1 Roma (2006/07)
Manchester United went into this game at Old Trafford 2-1 down on aggregate against Roma. However, this didnât seem to cause many worries for them as they found themselves 3 goals up in the early stages. A certain Cristiano Ronaldo helped the cause, scoring a brace on the night as they ended the Italian sideâs Champions League dreams for that season.
5. Paris Saint-Germain 7-0 Brest (2024/25)
The Champions League debutants Brest were given a rather unfortunate play-off round tie last season against the eventual winners of the competition, Paris Saint-Germain. After losing at home 3-0 to the side from the capital, they would go on to lose 7-0 away with goals coming from seven different goalscorers.
4. Manchester City 7-0 RB Leipzig (2022/23)
Once again, this huge victory came for the eventual winners of the competition in the 2022/23 season. Erling Haaland was certainly on form on the night, scoring five goals in total to put Pep Guardiolaâs men through to the quarter-final on their march to glory come the end of the season.
3. Manchester City 7-0 Schalke (2018/19)
After quite a tight first leg away in Germany, Manchester City would have still been confident to wrap the tie up at home against Schalke. However, after going 1-0 up thanks to a penalty from Sergio AgĂźero, the English side didnât stop there and went on to add six more goals to their tally on the night.
2. Bayern Munich 7-0 Shakhtar Donetsk (2014/15)
After holding Bayern to a goalless draw at home, Shakhtar would have been hoping to do similar away in Germany and possibly win the tie on penalties. However, this was not how it went, as they saw themselves reduced to 10 men after three minutes and then Bayern were ruthless, scoring seven goals and winning the game 7-0.
1. Bayern Munich 7-0 Basel (2011/12)
Taking the top two spots on this list are Bayern Munich and this occasion was the first time it had been achieved in Champions League history. The German side came into the second leg 1-0 down surprisingly, but that didnât stop them humiliating Basel on the night. Goals from Mario Gomez, Arjen Robben and Thomas MĂźller saw Bayern reach the last eight comfortably.
