The Kerala government is considering a multi-agency investigation into the previous administration’s unsuccessful effort to host the Argentina national football team for an exhibition match in Kochi. A Sports Department review has identified alleged financial irregularities, procedural violations and possible breaches of foreign exchange and money laundering regulations.
The issue stems from 2023 announcements that the 2022 World Cup winners would play in Kerala in 2025. The plan was later dropped after the team’s schedule omitted India. Following a change in government, an inquiry found no proof that a sponsor had paid the promised $15 million fee and noted the absence of any formal agreement with the Argentina Football Association.
The review also criticised the selection of a recently formed company as organiser without public tender and highlighted missing official records. The proposed match at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was cancelled, and questions remain over security commitments made before formal approval.
