Sebastian Coe outlined a clear stance on preventing political overreach in international sport. He described the ideal balance as keeping politicians involved yet preventing them from controlling key decisions. Speaking at the European championships, the World Athletics president addressed concerns about political issues affecting the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. He also discussed the exclusion of Russian athletes from track and field events, the role of private investment in sports, and recent criticism of FIFA after a suspension was lifted following external pressure. Coe stressed that sports bodies must maintain independence when facing outside influence. He noted the value of strong ties with government for event delivery but warned against allowing such contacts to affect sporting rules. The former Olympic champion and parliament member said effective governance requires both cooperation and firm boundaries. He pointed to ongoing talks within athletics federations about partnerships with private equity and sovereign wealth funds to boost revenue. Coe said such arrangements are becoming common and should include strong oversight and clear communication. World Athletics faces expiring media and sponsorship contracts in 2029, making new funding sources a priority. Coe also confirmed he will defend the organization’s ban on Russian athletes at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, arguing that eligibility decisions rest with each sport’s governing body to protect competition integrity.
