A new poll indicates European trust in American security assurances has reached a record low. Just one in ten respondents across fifteen nations regard the United States as an ally, while majorities in every country doubt Washington would assist if attacked. Released on Wednesday by the European Council on Foreign Relations ahead of upcoming G7 and Nato meetings, the findings highlight widespread skepticism toward the US. Although many expect relations to improve after Donald Trump departs office, growing numbers favor strengthening European defenses to offset potential American inconsistency. Actions such as Middle East policy, remarks on Greenland, proposed troop withdrawals and doubts about Nato have encouraged a pragmatic shift. Analysts note broad backing for less reliance on Washington, including higher defense budgets and greater confidence that nearby nations would provide help during crises. The May survey covered Austria, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. On average only eleven percent now see the US as an ally, down from twenty-two percent in late 2024. Most describe it as a necessary partner, though some view it as a rival or adversary. Majorities everywhere lack confidence in US military support during an attack. In nearly all countries except Bulgaria, respondents believe at least some European states would assist instead. Support for increased national defense spending has risen four percentage points since last year, though Italy remains opposed. Almost half back joint EU borrowing for defense, with strongest approval in Portugal, Denmark, the Netherlands and Spain. Most favor reducing dependence on American weapons and buying European alternatives. Opposition to cutting other public spending for defense remains high. Few support replacing Nato with an EU-only system. Many anticipate better transatlantic ties after Trump. Despite energy prices, most reject resuming Russian oil and gas imports. Views on Ukraine joining the EU stay divided.
