Russian authorities are dealing with the repercussions of a popular influencer’s widely shared video condemning government handling of various issues, coinciding with a continued drop in President Vladimir Putin’s popularity for six straight weeks. Victoria Bonya, famous from a 2006 reality television program similar to Big Brother, uploaded an 18-minute clip on Instagram cautioning that unresolved problems could lead to unrest. She stated that citizens, performers, and local leaders fear the administration. The video, which has accumulated 26 million views and over 1.3 million likes in four days, listed concerns including floods in Dagestan, oil spills on the Black Sea, animal slaughters in Siberia, online disruptions, and economic pressures on small enterprises from inflation and taxation. Living abroad, Bonya warned that suppressed frustrations might erupt suddenly. On Thursday, officials in Moscow unusually responded by confirming efforts to resolve the mentioned issues. Her remarks avoided direct attacks on Putin or the Ukraine conflict, leading to theories that it might be a staged effort to show responsiveness ahead of elections. This tactic aligns with portraying Putin as an uninformed leader misled by underlings, shielding him from criticism amid rising dissatisfaction. Experts doubt coordination, viewing it as genuine expression of widespread fatigue. A political analyst noted increasing awareness that domestic woes stem from the ongoing war, making excuses harder for the government. An ex-adviser to Putin, now in exile, suggested such celebrity statements could broaden opposition by attracting new groups frustrated with internet issues, rising costs, and war intrusions into daily life. Recent surveys indicate Putin’s support has reached post-2022 invasion lows. During a recent meeting, he urged explanations for economic shortfalls. Additionally, pro-war commentators express discontent over battlefield setbacks and hidden casualties, claiming the military fails to adjust.
