Sri Lanka has reinstated train services on its northern rail line following repair efforts supported by India. The infrastructure suffered significant harm from Cyclone Ditwah, necessitating immediate fixes to resume functionality. This transportation system plays a crucial role in moving people, delivering critical supplies, and supporting commerce in the regions hit by the storm.
The repair initiative for the northern route began in January, financed by a $5 million grant from India. This effort is included in a broader $450 million aid program from India focused on rebuilding and recovery.
In a statement shared on X, the Indian Embassy in Sri Lanka noted: ‘Operations on the northern rail line have recommenced today after India-backed repairs to sections damaged by Cyclone Ditwah, funded through a $5 million grant within India’s $450 million assistance framework. Finished before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, this restores an essential transport connection in the affected zones.’
