Mumbai Indians batting coach Kieron Pollard expressed confidence in the upcoming arrival of England all-rounder Will Jacks for their Indian Premier League encounter with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
During a pre-game media session, Pollard addressed questions about Jacks’ condition, noting that the team had no information on any health problems. He highlighted the strength of the Mumbai squad, indicating they are prepared even without Jacks for now.
‘We anticipate Will Jacks joining us shortly. Regarding any fitness concerns, I’m not aware of them. Our team includes more than 20 players, and while he’s absent currently, that will change soon,’ Pollard stated.
He voiced faith in Jacks’ potential to perform in multiple roles, saying, ‘Once he arrives, we expect him to maintain a tight bowling economy, take wickets, and contribute with the bat.’
Pollard also defended fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah after criticism following a recent game against Rajasthan Royals. He explained that modern T20 cricket values control over sheer wicket-taking ability.
‘In today’s T20 format, the focus isn’t solely on wickets. We’ve seen powerplays exceed 100 runs. Sometimes, a strong defense is the best strategy. We’re not overly concerned about Bumrah’s lack of wickets. He’s an elite bowler who has excelled for India and Mumbai Indians repeatedly. When opportunities arise, he’ll claim wickets, but if he keeps runs down, that’s valuable too,’ Pollard remarked.
Previewing the matchup with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Pollard noted that all IPL games are crucial, with the primary goal being to earn points rather than dwelling on the opponent’s capabilities.
‘This is the IPL—every game is intense and eagerly awaited because two points are on the line. We concentrate on our own performance and aim to play solid cricket, hoping for a favorable outcome,’ he added.
Pollard also honored captain Rohit Sharma for marking 15 years with the franchise, calling it an exceptional accomplishment in contemporary cricket.
‘Rohit Sharma has reached 15 years as a Mumbai Indians player, which is a remarkable feat for anyone. Few can claim loyalty to one team for so long. I’ve experienced it myself. He’s been an outstanding leader for us and for Indian cricket—a true icon. We hope this continues, and we benefit from his achievements. We’re glad to have him in our group,’ Pollard said.
