Lille moved back into third place in Ligue 1 following a straightforward 4-0 victory against a Toulouse team reduced to 10 players on Sunday. Goals from full-backs Thomas Meunier and Romain Perraud came before and after halftime, with Matias Fernandez-Pardo and Olivier Giroud adding the final touches. This result propelled Bruno Genesio’s team ahead of Marseille, securing the last direct qualification spot for the Champions League. Lille now holds 53 points, one ahead of Marseille under Habib Beye, in the race for entry into the league stage of Europe’s top club tournament.

Genesio, Lille’s coach, commented, ‘We accomplished our objective.’ He added, ‘We recognized the significance of this game, but five more remain, and we must maintain our recent form.’

Meunier, the right-back, scored the opener in the 23rd minute with a deflected shot concluding a smooth team play. The players gathered around their coach to celebrate, honoring Genesio who had recently mourned his father’s passing. He described the moment as deeply touching, noting it reflected the squad’s strong camaraderie, which contributes to their success.

Toulouse, positioned securely in 10th, appeared focused on their approaching French Cup semi-final against Lens, a contender for the Ligue 1 title, and posed little threat except for one chaotic corner early on that struck the Lille goalpost.

The match’s outcome was sealed early in the second half. Nabil Bentaleb delivered a precise pass to Fernandez-Pardo, who was fouled by defender Mark McKenzie, leading to McKenzie’s red card. Perraud then scored from the free kick with a powerful low drive from 25 yards out, beating goalkeeper Guillaume Restes.

Fernandez-Pardo, the 21-year-old Belgian striker, added the third goal by turning on a pass from captain Benjamin Andre and finishing with his right foot in the 55th minute. Giroud completed the scoring with a penalty in the 88th minute, marking his seventh league goal this season.

In another match, fifth-placed Lyon stayed in the hunt for Champions League spots with a 2-0 home win against mid-table Lorient. Substitute Endrick, on loan from Real Madrid, provided a cross for Roman Yaremchuk’s header four minutes after the break. Corentin Tolisso, also a halftime substitute, scored the second by heading into an open net after goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo saved a shot from Endrick.

Nice and Le Havre played to a 1-1 draw in a contest between teams aiming to avoid the relegation playoff zone. Ally Samatta gave Le Havre the lead in the 41st minute, but Ali Abdi equalized for Nice near the 60th minute. Nice sits one point behind Le Havre and four points above 16th-placed Auxerre.
