Australian athlete Gout Gout has broken the 20-second threshold in the 200-meter event, prompting discussions about his potential to challenge Usain Bolt’s achievements. His coach, Di Sheppard, described the possibilities as unpredictable after Gout recorded 19.67 seconds at the national championships in Sydney. This performance surpassed his previous Australian record of 20.02 seconds and marked him as the first from his country to achieve a legal time below 20 seconds. Aidan Murphy followed closely with a strong showing in the same competition, but Gout drew primary attention by exceeding Bolt’s mark at the same age. The only teenager to have run faster is Erriyon Knighton, whose 2022 result was not officially recognized due to a ban. While early parallels to Bolt may be premature, Gout’s progress suggests his team aims to surpass the Jamaican’s 19.19-second world record from 2009. Manager James Templeton expressed satisfaction but not surprise, noting a near-sub-20 time from the prior year under windy conditions that prevented further attempts. Gout’s recent achievement has alerted the global athletics community, and he has pursued this milestone since an earlier unofficial sub-20 run. He set a personal target of 19.75 seconds and was delighted to better it. Looking ahead, Gout feels relieved to confirm his capability and is eager for further improvements at age 18, focusing on consistent performances without added pressure. He will compete in the 100-meter event at the under-20 juniors this week, skipping the 200 meters, before facing Olympic winner Noah Lyles in a 150-meter race at the Golden Spike meet in Ostrava in June.
