Apple has announced that Tim Cook will step down as CEO but remain with the company. John Ternus, the head of hardware engineering, will assume the position on September 1. In a statement, Cook, aged 65, expressed his deep affection for Apple. He has led the company since 2011, following Steve Jobs, and is recognized for his expertise in operations and supply chains. Under his leadership, Apple expanded internationally and released numerous updated products, though he did not achieve the same innovative reputation as his predecessor.

In his new position as executive chair, Cook will focus on interactions with international policymakers. Over the last decade, he has effectively managed Apple’s worldwide supply chain during tensions between the U.S. and China, negotiating with leaders like Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. He secured tariff exemptions for products and shifted some manufacturing to Vietnam and India without provoking backlash from Beijing. Apple has continued to attract millions of customers in China and achieved record revenues there recently.

Ternus, 50, joined Apple in 2001 and is noted for his internal navigation skills. However, with less experience in external affairs, he may rely on Cook for handling global relations.

Separately, an incident highlighted growing opposition to artificial intelligence. Early on April 10, a 20-year-old man threw a Molotov cocktail at the San Francisco home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman before fleeing. Authorities arrested him soon after, as he allegedly tried to enter OpenAI’s offices with flammable materials and a manifesto against AI.

This event marks a significant escalation in anti-AI sentiment, following other incidents like a protester chaining himself to the company’s doors and making threats. Another shooting occurred near Altman’s residence shortly afterward, though details remain unclear. Altman responded in a blog post, urging calmer discussions on AI and sharing a family photo. Such attacks reflect increasing public frustration with AI’s rapid integration into society, potentially targeting other tech figures or companies next. Anger toward AI is rising nationwide, extending beyond San Francisco.
