A recent image from Russia’s Roscosmos space agency has captured global attention. Taken by the Electro-L weather satellite, the wide-angle photograph displays Earth with distinctive colors. Notably, India appears in a vivid green tone, sparking widespread discussion on social media platforms.
The image, shared by the Russian embassy in Kenya via X (formerly Twitter), reveals continents including Eurasia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica. Experts explain that the unconventional hues result from the satellite’s use of multiple spectral bands, including infrared, which go beyond visible light.
The satellite employs 10 bands for data collection, with only a few in the visible spectrum, such as green and blue. The infrared bands help monitor atmospheric temperature, humidity, and cloud cover. The green shade over India likely reflects high vegetation density or elevated moisture levels in the region.

The release also underscores Russia’s growing satellite network. The country currently maintains about 1,559 operational satellites for civilian and military purposes. Plans are in place to expand this to around 2,600 in the near future, aiming to improve services in weather prediction, communications, and planetary monitoring.
