The 2030 Commonwealth Games remain four years distant while ambitions for the 2036 Olympics stay aspirational, yet Ahmedabad is already reshaping its cityscape to position itself as India’s premier sports destination. The Narendra Modi Stadium has become a leading cricket venue, but city and state authorities pursue wider goals. These include enlarging the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave past the current cricket ground and converting the Gujarat Police Academy into a multi-sport site for future events. Plans center on the Sabarmati Riverfront within the 335-acre enclave, adding a 12,000-seat aquatics center, an 18,000-capacity indoor arena, and a tennis facility with 24 courts whose main court seats 24,000 spectators. Additional features comprise a riverfront park, boulevard, and the National Institute for Sports Excellence. The 143-acre academy site in Karai will include a 50,000-seat athletics stadium, a shooting center with indoor and outdoor ranges seating 4,000, and a multipurpose arena with a high-performance center. Construction has not started, but completion is targeted for 2028-2029. Officials state the projects form part of Ahmedabad’s long-term urban development rather than specific event preparations. The venues are nevertheless expected to host most events at the Commonwealth Games, though final decisions remain pending. The existing Veer Savarkar Complex also figures in planning after recent visits by Games officials. Two new hockey pitches are planned at IIT Gandhinagar, while Sanskar Dham seeks to stage archery, wrestling, and fencing. A 10,000-bed hostel under construction could serve as an athletes’ village. The 2029 World Police and Fire Games will provide an early test of readiness.
