A delegation of U.S. trade officials headed by the U.S. Trade Representative will travel to India from June 1 to June 4. The purpose is to complete details of an interim trade pact and advance talks on a wider bilateral agreement, according to an announcement by the Commerce Ministry on May 27, 2026.

Both nations released a joint statement on February 7, 2026, that set out a framework for an interim deal based on reciprocal trade benefits. The statement also confirmed their intent to pursue a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement.

Earlier, Indian representatives held in-person discussions in Washington from April 20 to 23. The upcoming visit by the U.S. side is intended to continue those exchanges.

The agenda includes finalizing the interim pact and progressing negotiations on market access, non-tariff barriers, customs procedures, investment promotion, and economic security coordination.

Indian officials have previously indicated that any final deal depends on clarity regarding tariffs the United States plans to apply to Indian competitors. The U.S. had earlier set a 50 percent tariff on Indian imports in August 2025, later lowered it to 25 percent, and considered a further reduction to 18 percent.

A Supreme Court ruling in August 2025 invalidated the legal basis for those tariffs and removed them. The administration then introduced a temporary 10 percent tariff on imports from all countries for 150 days, due to expire on July 24. Separate investigations into trade practices involving India and other partners were also initiated.

A federal trade court blocked the 10 percent tariff on May 7 for certain appellants, though an appeals court has temporarily stayed that ruling at the government’s request.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal stated on May 12 that India seeks the preferential market access outlined in the February joint statement relative to its competitors.
