Netherlands top scorer Memphis Depay recovered from injury in time for coach Ronald Koeman to name him in the 26-man squad for the World Cup next month. Depay was among three players recently back from injury selected on Wednesday, despite limited recent playing time ahead of the event hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Netherlands all-time leading scorer with 55 goals made his first appearance in weeks for Brazilian club Corinthians on Sunday after a thigh injury. Koeman said he would have preferred an earlier return and would monitor Depay’s fitness. If needed, in-form Roma forward Donyell Malen is available. Justin Kluivert, back after knee surgery, defender Jurrien Timber, recently returned after winning the Premier League with Arsenal, and Timber’s brother Quinten were also selected. Koeman called up debutant West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville but omitted Liverpool wingback Jeremie Frimpong due to injury concerns. Midfielder Xavi Simons is out after an ACL rupture, while Stefan de Vrij and Matthijs de Ligt are also injured. The three-time World Cup finalist opens Group F in Dallas against Japan, then faces Sweden and Tunisia. Koeman said the seventh-ranked side aims to win but knows the challenges ahead.
