Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu fought through to the second round of the Indonesia Open after a straight-sets victory, while former world number one Kidambi Srikanth suffered a first-round defeat in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Sindhu overcame Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan 25-23, 21-16 in a 51-minute women’s singles contest at the Super 1000 event. She used her attacking style to secure a tight opening game and maintained control in the second.
The Indian player is expected to meet Olympic champion An Se-young next, a opponent she has yet to defeat in nine previous meetings.
Srikanth exited after losing 19-21, 15-21 to Japan’s Yushi Tanaka in the men’s singles. Malvika Bansod also departed in the opening round, beaten 12-21, 10-21 by Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong.
In men’s doubles, Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun advanced with a 21-18, 21-10 win over Malaysian pair Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong. Other Indian players are scheduled later in the day.
