Several clubs, including Bath, have expressed interest in joining England’s Premiership Women’s Rugby league. Expansion plans lack a fixed schedule, yet the prospect has raised questions about travel for non-professional players, effects on international play, and player views. The interest phase served as an exploratory step rather than a formal application. It forms part of a ten-year strategy to build a sustainable competition. The league is viewed as the world’s leading women’s club rugby event and features overseas talent. It currently has nine teams following the 2023 exit of Worcester Warriors. Interested clubs needed to meet criteria such as £1.2 million in yearly rugby spending, suitable facilities, and squads of 45 to 55 players. Unions from Wales, Scotland and Ireland, along with English clubs, have shown interest. Bath, the men’s Premiership champions, confirmed their interest but stressed the need for player investment and a solid business plan. The deadline for expressions of interest was 30 April. Expansion has been ruled out for the 2026-27 season, though future growth remains possible. Debate has focused on travel demands for players who hold other jobs. Gloucester-Hartpury co-captain Mo Hunt noted that Sunday and Friday fixtures already create difficulties and that any expansion would require schedule adjustments and greater financial support. Wales scrum-half Keira Bevan said Welsh players would welcome a domestic PWR side. Exeter Chiefs head coach Steve Salvin highlighted the potential for stronger international competition. Ireland hooker Cliodhna Moloney-MacDonald also supported the idea, citing benefits for European women’s rugby events.
